Choosing A Yoga Mat

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

When a person decides to start participating in a yoga class, whether it is in a gym or at home, she will soon find out that it is impossible to keep the feet and hands in place, as well as finding some of the positions extremely uncomfortable if she does not have a yoga mat to help.Yoga mats are designed to be slightly sticky which helps the yoga practitioner to hold difficult poses without continually readjusting themselves.  As the class goes on, the person usually sweats more which also causes this slippage, and a yoga mat helps to reduce that eventuality.

Many classes offer the use of yoga mats, often for a slight charge after a certain number of classes, but the cleanliness of the mats due to the high amount of sweating, as well as bare feet on the mats can be an issue, even though they are thoroughly cleaned.  It is even more uncomfortable to be in a pose with the face pressed against the mat while wondering how many people’s feet had been in that spot before that time.  Because of this, most people who do yoga choose to buy their own yoga mat and often a yoga mat bag for carrying it.

Types of Mats

There are many different types of yoga mats on the market which can run as little as fifteen dollars up to a whopping two hundred fifty dollars.  The average yoga mat is made of a rubber material that is rolled up for easy carrying.  Many of the mats come with some sort of strap for carrying it easily over the shoulder and others come with bags.  For those who are more concerned about the bacteria that can build up on the mats if they are not cleaned regularly, there are antimicrobial yoga mats that help to prevent this eventuality and run around fifty dollars.

For those who are not as concerned about bacteria but do like their mats to look good, there are plenty of designer yoga mats that have all sorts of different patterns on them and come in all different colors.  Most of these yoga mats have a designer bag that can be bought with it (albeit at an additional cost, often half of the price of the yoga mat again) and have some sort of peaceful design, flowers, suns, or bamboo.  There are also mats that are made of environmentally friendly material, such as recycled rubber or cotton.

What You Need to Know About Basic Yoga

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Basic Yoga has been designed to primarily focus on the overall wellness of a person. When you get involved with yoga you will surely learn new lifestyle ideas and new ways of approaching life and the world. Yoga can improve your health in a variety of ways. You will also increase your strength, become more flexible, have improved body balance and learn to let go of stress and increase your vitality. Yoga also is an enjoyable way to loose weight.

Practicing the various yoga positions, also known as asanas increases your flexibility by working on your joints, your muscles, tendons and ligaments. You will notice a significant improvement in your flexibility as you continue the practice of yoga stretching exercises. You will be pleased with the benefits of yoga such as muscle toning and the reduction of body fat.

Yoga is wonderful for thoroughly messaging the organs and the glands of your body, including those that rarely receive stimulation. The massaging of your organs and glands helps your body to prevent diseases from harming your health. A significant benefit of practicing yoga is the increased blood flow that occurs throughout your body which improves your health. The increased blood flow significantly improves your body’s ability to remove toxic substances and delivers nourishment throughout your body.

There are said to be over 8,400,000 asanas or yoga positions compiled by the yoga masters over the period of 5,000 years that yoga has been in existence. For most yoga novices, a lot less are required in order to get started. The number of basic yoga asanas recommended by instructors varies but usually only a little more than 12 basic yoga positions are taught to beginners.

Even if one does not desire to be able to perform the more advanced and complicated asana, there are benefits to practicing basic yoga exercises, no matter the school of thought you choose to follow. Improved balance, strength, and flexibility are the first most obvious benefits.

Additional benefits of yoga is yoga’s ability to help reduce pain by assisting the brain to regulate an important mechanism found in your spinal cord and by increasing the release of pain reducing substances made by your body. The breathing routines that are used in yoga also can provide pain relief.

Basic yoga involves seven types of body movement during exercise including circumduction, flexion, abduction, adduction, rotation, extension, and hyperextension. Combinations of these body movements are used to create the yoga stances and positions. These movements are combined with breathing exercises and concentration. Breathing is also the guide in basic yoga for coming into an asana, holding an asana, and coming out of it. All the movements are ideally done gracefully. To learn how to do basic yoga, look for a qualified certified instructor and failing that, look for educational videos that may help you.

Understanding the Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Your mind is the key to worlds of untapped potential to improve your life. It’s the greatest tool you have to make a significant impact in your life, and mostly the power of your subconscious mind just does what it wants! The key is to get this under your conscious control.

Have you ever done anything throughout your day on complete auto-pilot? Simple tasks that you just get done without thinking about why you’re doing them are those controlled by your subconscious mind power need to do them.

Now we should take a look at how we get an action to become subconscious to that regard. If, for instance, something that you didn’t like ends showing on the screen, you’ll find that you have the urge to change the channel. Your subconscious mind has a lot of impact on the way that you act, and you’ll discover that over time, so long as you have the right training. You are going to get a lot of good in the quality of your life by utilizing the power of your subconscious mind.

How can you really harness the power of your subconscious mind? If you can really do that, you are going to be living out your real potential. Too many people buy into the fact that there are nasty things living in the subconscious, and though we should definitely respect this as the truth, there are also things in there that can help us.

Let’s take a look at the beneficial parts of the human mind and figure out how you can use the subconscious as something that will help you improve yourself. Some people think that they are looking at something unimaginably difficult, but this is far from the case. When you want to guide the subconscious mind, there is a series of simple processes that you can use to make it start to move the way that you want. You have unlimited potential to work with, so consider some of the options that you can take advantage of in this regard; there are lots of tools for you to look into.

When you are looking into how to harness the power of your subconscious mind, you’ll discover that one great tool to use is affirmation. Through affirmation, you are going to remind yourself of positive things to achieve your goals.

When you want to achieve a daunting goal that is looming in front of you, for example, you might find yourself overcome with a feeling of weariness and tiredness. This is something that is a natural stress response to something that you do not want to do. With the power of affirmation working behind you, though, you’ll find that you can actually beat this state of mind and look for a better way to approach the task at hand. This is something that can make a huge difference.

When you want to make sure that you are thinking positively, considered how great the rewards are going to be when you want to perform the task. You can also look in your mirror and tell yourself that you are the best person for this task and that the end result is going to be something simply stunning; this can make a huge difference to the work that you are doing.

When you want to do things like stop smoking or if you want to overeat, or quit drinking, affirmations can be enormously important. Constantly repeating your affirmations can help you tap into your subconscious mind and help you change your behavior; it doesn’t matter whether you are writing down your affirmations or speaking them.

Affirmations can come from outside as well; things like hypnotic therapy are just conduits to putting affirmations into your subconscious mind. It can be done by going to a hypnotherapist or listening to pre-recorded hypnosis audios.

You might also want to try brainwave synchronization or binaural beats. These are specially created sound frequencies you play through a set of headphones. The frequencies change so you hear different things in each ear. This can synchronize the separate sides of your brain which can allow you to descend into a deep meditation easily. You’re able to access your subconscious more easily in this state.

Complete mastery of your subconscious mind’s power takes years of training, as shown by highly trained Buddhist monks. They are able to display amazing abilities through mastering and controlling their subconscious power so that it manifests through their conscious minds. Things like levitation or breaking solid objects without pain or injury.

Some claim that the power of the subconscious mind lets us manipulate matter on a subatomic level. The leading proponent of this is ‘The Secret’. Less spectacularly, using the secret and positive affirmations have helped lots of people improve their lives in countless ways.

Some people are claiming that quantum mechanics can explain powers like ESP and telekinesis as subconscious manipulation of matter around us; this aligns with what the most ancient religions in the world have been telling us. This is further evidence of the power of The Secret and the Law of Attraction.

The sheer power of your subconscious mind is far greater than most of us realize or understand. You can change your beliefs and your behaviors, but you can also begin to re-shape your entire life and unleash your full potential once you learn to harness the power within yourself.

The Joys Of Being A Lucid Dreamer

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

So you want to lucid dream. Well that’s a good start, at least you know what you want to do; but how exactly do you go about it?

It’s important to think about why you’d like to become a lucid dreamer, too. There are a number of benefits to dreaming this way, but first we should look at normal sleep, so we’ll understand them.

Normal sleep helps us refresh ourselves for the next day. However, when you experience lucid dreaming, you would be able to control the period of time when you were dreaming.

Normal sleep just seems to serve the purpose of simply refreshing ourselves in order to live out the next day. But what if you could control that period of time that you have dreams?

Lucid dreamers are in complete control of their dreams. This allows them to explore new worlds in their mind and expand the scope of their dreams. Lucid dreamers can also conscious choose not to have nightmares – they just change the dream.

If you want to become a lucid dreamer, how do you manage it? There are two main ways. The first is what’s called a dream initiated lucid dream, or DILD. That’s when the dreamer realizes they’re dreaming in the middle of a dream, restoring their consciousness without leaving the dreaming state itself.

The second way is having a wake-initiated lucid dream (WILD); where the dreamer goes from being awake, to being asleep with no change in consciousness. In other words, the dreamer enters their dream as if it were a door, rather than just “waking up” in a dream.

So, what

methods can you use to induce these kinds of lucid dreaming states?

Dream Recall

If you’re interested in lucid dreaming, dream recall is one of the most effective ways of learning to do it. Dream recall is the ability to remember your dreams. If you remember them, you’re more likely to be able to recognize them while you’re asleep. That’s because most of us have the same
dreams or dream elements more than once.

The way to practise dream recall is by keeping a dream journal. The dream journal is meant as a tool to write down anything you can remember about your dream, in order to recall it for the future. This should be done right after waking up; otherwise dreams will become harder to remember.

Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD)

This is a technique that was developed by Dr. Stephen LaBerge, one of the lead scientists studying lucid dreaming. The intent here is to simply tell yourself that you will remember something, like an object for example and then in the dream, when you see this object you will realize it is a dream.

To use this method, first go to sleep. Set an alarm beforehand to wake you up a few hours later (about five or six). Once you wake up, don’t go back to sleep. Read for a little while, or think about lucid dreaming for a while, then head back to sleep.

The process here is to go to sleep, doing nothing but setting your alarm to wake you up a few hours later (5 or 6). Once you wake up, DO NOT go back to sleep. Instead, do something else like read for a while, or think as much as you can about lucid dreaming for around an hour then go back to bed.

Cycle Adjustment Technique

This technique was created by Daniel Love, and involves setting an alarm that will wake you an hour and a half before you’d normally get up. Once you’re used to waking up early, alternate between the early alarm and your old alarm. When you’re waking up normally, your body will already be expecting the early alarm, and make you more likely to “wake up” in your dream.

Created by Daniel Love, this method involves setting an alarm to wake you one and a half hours before your normal wake-up time. Once you get used to this early time, alternate your alarm between a normal time and the early one. When your alarm is set to wake you normally, you’ll find your body’s already ready to wake up early. That makes it more likely that you’ll wake up in your dream, and dream lucidly.

Wake-initiation of Lucid Dreams (WILD)

Several ways to stay aware but not awake include imagining descending or going up stairs, chanting, counting, breathing control, counting your breaths, and relaxing your body from head to toe. This all falls under self hypnosis. Don’t do this when you’re tired, or you’ll simply fall unconscious.

Recent technological advances mean that dreaming masks and other useful devices have been developed. They contain strobe lights and other devices that are believed to induce lucid dreaming.

Technology has moved on in recent years, and there are various devices like dreaming masks and other scientific appliances which contain such things as strobe lights to induce lucid dreams.

Definitely the easiest and most reliable way of inducing a lucid dream however is by listening to binaural beats sound frequencies via headphones.

These work by synchronizing the two hemispheres of the brain and have the effect of almost instantaneously changing your brainwaves to the REM frequency needed for a lucid dream to occur.

Combined with self affirmations and sessions of self hypnosis, these methods make it easy to become a lucid dreamer. You just need the practice and determination

Why Do People Get Periodontal Disease?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

stop bleeding gums

What is periodontal disease? It’s the same thing as gum disease, which is when your tissue and bone in the mouth become infected. They get that way when you fail to keep up with getting the buildup of plaque taken care of.

Poor dental health can lead to many serious health problems. Not only that but you may lose teeth when you fail to get it treated by a professional. That plaque that grows on your teeth is invisible, but it’s there, and helping the bacteria grow continually.

That bacterium will grow and toxins will come from it, those toxins will attack your teeth and gums. Since there are literally hundreds of different bacteria living in your mouth, you need to make sure that you practice good oral hygiene.

Of course you know you need to brush each day, but how many times do you brush? It should be around two times a day, for three total minutes each time. None of those quick brushings that you use to do when your parents weren’t watching are of much value.

Flossing should be done everyday too, and regular visits to the dentist for a cleaning are useful.

All of those things are done for your benefit. With those cleanings you may want to try and have them done twice a year. Toothbrushes should be soft bristles, the hard ones may actually hurt your gums.

With all these steps followed you may find that you can combat gum disease. However, you may not be able to completely keep it away. So make sure you work hard to keep that plaque off your teeth and your gum disease chances at bay.

Disclaimer: If you have or think you might have gum disease or any other health problem, please visit your doctor or periodontist for advice, diagnosis and treatment. Fungal Infection of the Sinuses

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Lots of people love mushrooms, especially sauteed with a nice steak. But did you know that there are certain kinds of mushrooms that can infect the sinus passages?

The mushrooms we’re talking about here aren’t the kind used for food, but they belong to the species known as fungi, including certain types of molds. Fungi are organisms that resemble plants, but unlike genuine plants can’t produce their own food through the process of photosynthesis. Usually these types of fungi live in our warm, moist nasal passages without causing any problems. However, when a body’s resistance is low, these fungi can become harmful.

Fungi usually feed on dead organic matter, which is why food mushrooms are found living at the roots of trees and in the carpet of leaves composting on a forest floor. Fungi like dark, warm, wet places, just like the insides of our noses. Sometimes fungi can feed on other living organisms, such as the mucus membranes inside nasal and sinus passages. When that happens, these membranes become inflamed and can become infected.

Molds are a kind of microscopic fungi related to mushrooms. To reproduce themselves, they release spores that can sail through the air like pollen. Fungi of this type can be found throughout the year in many regions. They’re affected by the weather – when’s warm and rainy, or even warm and humid, you can expect an increase in the growth of molds. That’s one of the reasons why it can be essential to control the humidity in a home, to reduce the likelihood of mold growing in the walls, especially on building materials that contain a lot of cellulose (once again, that’s a wood-derived product of the kind that outdoor fungi are so fond of eating).

Common types of mold found indoors include Aspergillus and its subspecies (A. Flavus, A. Versicolor); Cladosporium; Penicillium; Alternaria and the toxic "Black Mold, " Stachybotrys atra (S. Atra). Any of these indoor molds can be the microscopic mushrooms that infect sinuses. Sometimes they produce effects that are quite toxic to the human body. The best way to avoid such an infection is by working to prevent their growth in the home, and through good health habits, especially frequent hand washing and other forms of hygiene.

If you do become infected, see your doctor immediately. And if you suspect fungi may have invaded your home, contact a building specialist to conduct tests. It’s better to be safe than suffer with a fungal infection.

Can Anyone Develop The Powers To Be A Clairvoyant

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

The paranormal term of clairvoyance originated in French language. The French word clair means clear, voyance means vision and voyant the word for visionary. Clairvoyance therefore means clear vision. An individual who is clairvoyant has is a clear visionary. The term, unfortunately, is only a literal translation that is not accurate nor helpful.

When the word clairvoyant is used to describe a person, it means that this person has exhibited some form of psychic ability. This is a rather broad reading of the word; more specifically, a clairvoyant is someone with the ability to perceive or know things without the use of their five physical senses the terms clairvoyance and ESP are largely interchangeable.

Clairvoyance involves, usually, a clairvoyant. A clairvoyant has the ability of knowing about what is happening at the moment, but that is far away from their physical senses. There are documented cases of clairvoyants viewing events that happen either in the future or in the past. It has been considered that clairvoyance is a form of prophecy or precognition because of this ability.

The methods by which the clairvoyant gathers the hidden information can vary, but they usually fall into one of six major categories. Clairvoyance is probably most associated with the first form. The first form is known as remote viewing. While remote viewing, the clairvoyant is able to see a person, event, object, or location that is hidden. This usually takes the form of a visual hallucination or seeing something from within their minds eye.

Clairaudience refers to the clairvoyant receiving knowledge in the form of sound. They will hear sounds and voices which only they (and only they) can hear.

The next kind of clairvoyance is known as clairsentience. With clairsentience the individual is able to gain knowledge of remote events through touch and feeling. There are cases that have taken the form of feeling and actual object that is not really there. In other instances it is more of a feeling or a vibe that is felt from locations, events, and people that are remote.

The fourth one is clairalience. This happens when a person is able to gain knowledge of remote events and locations with their sense of smell. It is possible for them to smell wildflowers or grass of a beautiful spring meadow that is followed by the smell of gunpowder that is followed with the scent of blood. No one else is able to smell these things and there is never an apparent source for the smells.

The fifth form is called clairgustance and in this case an individual who has not eaten or drank anything can taste different flavors with no apparent source. They can also describe the taste of these things at a distance from where they are.

The last and sixth type of clairvoyance is claricognizance. This type is perhaps the hardest one to explain and define. With claircognizance an individual somehow knows something about a location, person, event, or object and they are unable to explain how they got the knowledge. They jut know it. To some degree, claircongnizance is known as the catch-all category of clairvoyance.

There are numerous documentations of occurrences of individuals with clairvoyant abilities historically within many cultures worldwide. The instances of clairvoyance have been found in many of the worlds widespread religions.

Clairvoyance, in Buddhism for instances, is considered to permit humans capable to achieve advanced levels of meditation. However, in this case, the clairvoyant feels the vibrations of others.

There are many skeptics who scoff at the possibility of clairvoyance, just as there are with other psychic abilities. Its a natural inclination it is difficult to believe in something without concrete, objective proof. However, it should be noted that only a few centuries ago you would have seen the same kind of skepticism about magnetism!

Of course there are people that are skeptical of clairvoyants. It is normal human nature for individuals to deny that something exists just because it is not understood. For example, even the existence of magnetism and electricity was denied by ’scientists’ not that long ago historically.

How clairvoyance works is not yet understood, but this shouldnt be taken as a reason to ignore the existence of this phenomenon. There are a growing number of people who believe that any one of us can learn to use clairvoyance and other latent psychic abilities with practice and dedication.

Just because we don’t understand how it works, there is no reason to deny its existence. It has been suggested that in the distant past, all humans used to be clairvoyant but for some reason lost their powers. It is thought that everybody could again become clairvoyant if they make the effort and choose to develop these powers.

Benefits of Bikram Yoga

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Bikram yoga employs breathing techniques and poses which help practitioners maintain a high level of relaxation. This is achieved via the use of breathing techniques and unique body poses. At first it would be difficult for a few people to rid themselves of mundane concerns. However, in due time and practice, Bikram yoga will realign one’s focus, from outward to inward. This will enable anyone to truly asses their true physical, mental, and emotional state. With this, the benefits of Bikram yoga is not only found in the physical improvements practitioners experience, but also in the mental and emotional rewards they gain as they become more sensitive to their own body and mind’s needs.

Normally, if you want to have a good cardio workout you jog, run, or bike. Unfortunately, these physical activities over time will have an impact on your body. Although these exercises are great in developing cardiovascular health, the repetitive motions of the activities will ultimately lead to injury. So as an alternative cardiovascular workout, Bikram yoga is an excellent option. Although it has lesser impact on the body, it is impressive how much Bikram yoga calories burn in one session. Aside from that, it is also an effective muscle training workout. Several of the poses require the person to hold up their body for prolonged spans of time. The practitioner’s weight becomes a source of resistance. Muscles are strengthened and stretched. Bones are also strengthened. With special emphasis on the spine, Bikram yoga poses help people to increase their flexibility; thus, having a better range of motion.

Bikram yoga is done in a room heated up to about one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. This will cause practitioners to sweat heavily. The heat actually loosens up the body. The sometimes uncomfortable heat plus the sweat encourages practitioners to concentrate more on the activity since the warmth and sweat can be distractions. But more importantly, the heat allows the body’s pores to open up and dilates blood vessels. This will result in better circulation that will lead to more toxins released through sweat. Although the extra sweat may be beneficial as mentioned, it would be best if the practitioner would invest in some equipment that is specific for Bikram yoga. A good investment is a Bikram yoga mat, which absorbs sweat and prevents the practitioner from slipping.

A Bikram yoga session starts with the breathing technique called Pranayama. Doing this breathing technique, practitioners would stand and breathe deeply while their arms move in a specific manner. The Pranayama opens up the body and prepares it for the succeeding pose. Practitioners then perform bending poses sideways, forwards, and backwards, loosening the spine.

Xylitol and Sinus Irrigation…

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

When you have problems with your sinus area, such as a sinus infection, it’s a hassle. Not only will you have much pain, but you may not be able to sleep as well at night. But with the use of Xylitol with sinus irrigation, you might experience comfort once again.

Xylitol is found in wood sugar, and is actually already in our bodies. The body will make around 10 grams of this substance each day. Often used as a substitute to sugar in foods even, it’s not a drug. Used in many gums in order to help with preventing the tooth decaying that sugar can cause.

Not only is it thought that Xylitol with sinus irrigation should be done when you are suffering, but on a more regular basis. See it will help our sinuses and nasal passages out, because the bacteria that would normally attach itself inside our nasal passage may lessen.

Our bodies will react to the Xylitol that is sprayed into the nasal passage and be stimulated to create more to help defend the area. Plus that Xylitol will also reduce the salt that is sitting around in the passage, allowing the bodies antibiotics to work better and more effectively.

It’s not like using antibiotics that are given by the doctor, that your body may become immune too. Xylitol will not create that problem in your body, and you can continue to use it each time you feel an infection coming on. Though you should actually use it on a regular basis to help keep those bacteria down to a minimum. For the same reason, xylitol may be useful in the fight against gum disease.

So when asked why use Xylitol with sinus irrigation you now know why. It will help to keep the bacteria away, which will not only help with sinus infections, but also allergies. A substance that is already in our body, just by adding a bit more a big difference can be made.

Jill St.Cloud writes about sinus and nasal irrigation for relief from allergy symptoms and chronic sinus problems.

Binaural Beats And Manifestation

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Manifestation is the ability to make things happen. This is the simple explanation, of course; however, it is one we can relate to and work with. We all have some degree of the power of manifestation. We can tap into the powers we already have. We have the ability to work at harnessing this power and becoming more proficient at doing it.

Some websites suggest that there are foods you can eat to help tap into your own manifestation powers. Commonly known as brain foods, there are certain fatty acids and proteins that can make the brain stronger and help you develop a more attuned mind. Not all experts agree with dietary contributions, but since the foods that are healthy are the ones that feed the brain, you can err on the side of probability.

The power of the mind has only been partially explored. It is capable of many things we do not fully realize at this time. We can do many things and not even realize it is our mind that is making them so. However, many individuals know the basics of manifesting abundance.

For instance, how many times have you heard that healing your body depends on your frame of mind as well as your body? How many times have you heard that you can get what you want by focusing on that desire? All of these are forms of manifestation. We have and use these natural and intuitive senses on a regular basis. However, since we clog our minds with useless information, we fail to use them to get the rewards we seek.

What we fee our mind is essential, since the information we give it for processing and focus will help to determine the direction of our life. Focusing on small details that have no bearing on our mission forward will not aid us in practicing the skill of manifestation, we need to make a change.

So take some time, first, to learn to clear your mind of all that internal chatter and nonsense that takes up so much of your attention, needlessly. This is going to take some time, so don’t expect it to happen overnight. The ability to manifest is like anything else, a talent that needs to be developed. In fact, it takes a dedicated effort to truly develop it to its fullest potential, such that you may even eventually want to call it a lifestyle.

However, if we take the time to develop our ability to clear our mind and tap into our own sense and ability we will find that we become literally much more focused and capable of completing what we are looking for.

When it comes to mastering the natural abilities, it is possible to discipline yourself for manifestation. Master your natural abilities and then develop those abilities even further.
