Upon learning to attack the players should be taught how to defend. This will give them a free hand in developing their own unique style.

During this drill groups of teams should be formed by the players. Usually, when shifting from individual to group activities, the kids take time to adjust to the concept of team play. The nature of interaction between coach and the players should be that of guidance only.

Teach the players the importance of playing as group to win matches. The greatest gain is the players learn to play in a limited area without doing much with the ball and also to learn to work as a team.

Running: Some coaches make their players do continuous rounds of running. Even though its fine but I’d say that it would be better if players do just soccer specific running. It means that for about 30 minutes, they do a combination of running, jogging, walking, and sprinting in no set order.

Running in this manner enables the players to get strong and control their bodies better. And they do not feel drained since a walk after the sprint helps balance things out.

Just let the individual players decide on what they wish to do and when. If they wish to do sprints more than light jogging, there is no harm in it. As the kids develop more strength and energy, you can increase the length of the soccer conditioning program by 10 minutes.

Stretching: Persuade the players to do stretching exercises both after the training session as well as a match. Focus on the entire body but give special attention to hamstrings, groins, quads, calves and lower back. Ensure that the stretching postures are longer than the warm-up sessions. In general, 20 to 30 seconds is recommended.

Also, it makes sense to involve the kids in decision making process before you introduce anything new. This allows the kids to understand the system and accept the changes willfully.

As the coach, it is also mandatory for you to instill some moral teachings to the kids. For this, you should observe the kids performance individually. The coach should ensure that the kid gets sufficient time in field and their hard work is acknowledged. In addition to this, make sure to reprimand those as well who create a ruckus and deviate from the set norms.

Name the teams: Divide the groups into small teams which allow you to better coordinate the affairs. It’s also a good idea to name the teams for inculcating a feeling of closeness.

Determine success and failures: Choose a benchmark in advance to coach youth soccer for quantifying the performance. Take for example a study that reveals how much fun the kids are having during the sessions. Make out if they really enjoy the game or play considering it as just another task. Are the kids finding it easy to grasp the tricks of dribbling, managing the ball, and controlling it?

Give incentives: These keep the kids going and even the advanced players, for that matter. Now, these need not be substantive incentives. For example, the team that wins gets a half hour rest or gets to go half-hour early and so on. And avoid giving rewards for individual performance. This is for the reason that some players will always outshine the other players. Substitute it with rewarding team’s hard work.

Handling bad conduct: When teaching soccer, it can be terrible for team’s success if the poor conduct of players is not taken care of over time. For example, if a player is always late for the drills, do not ignore it. Have him perform a simple act as a punishment to make others aware of such mistakes.

Similarly, parents who tend to interfere in the team’s activities should also be handled like this. Don’t let it happen and give clear instructions. You must take the decisions being the coach of the team. But, involvement of parents to a certain level is also important.

Be in charge: Every single act of yours is closely observed by the players as it’s natural for them to copy you. So be sure of your demeanor in public. Make sure you behave properly with everyone including your team-mates, rival team, and fellow coaches. Get to the sports ground for practice sessions prior to the players. Do not disapprove of the players or the referee anytime during the practice matches.
