Crappie are a gamefish that are located in waters in all the lower 48 states and they go by many different games such as calico crappie, speckled perch, speckled bass, pole crappie, white perch, stawberry bass, and paper mouth. Bait fishing for crappie using crank baits is probably one of the most seldom used method of catching crappie. One of the best places and time to use these crappie lures is when they are feeding on schools of threadfin shad, and gizzard shad.

The best sizes select when bait fishing for crappie are 1 1/4″ to 3 1/2″ size crank baits. It is not uncommon when the  pole crappie are in a feeding frenzy to hook a few double catches of calico crappie at the same time. When you make your selection make sure you select a crank bait lure that has a rattle built into it. The vibration really attracts crappie. You also want to match the color of your crank bait to the color of the bait fish that the crappie are feed on, or as close as you can get. For example if you are following the shad schools catch a few shad to check their size and color. Also you should try to match the movement of your lure when you are bait fishing as close as you can to the movement of the bait fish the speckled bass are feeding on. Here again watch the shad as they move through the water and try to set your cranks to move the same as close as you can.

Cranks work great in the spring during the spawning season. When calico crappie are on their beds they hit just about anything that comes close to their nest. Paper Mouth are very active and feeding like crazy because the have been so inactive during the winter months. Their metabolisms start to crank up and they are ready to feed. This is a good thing for us crappie fisherman. The bait fish that the crappie will be feeding on will be larger because the bait fish will have not spawned yet so there will not be an abundance of bait fish fry to feed on. Again, another good reason to use crank baits for crappie.

Other very good spots to catch crappie with cranks are around docks, weed edges, and rock points. You will need to have a variety of different types of crank baits. You will want to have some shallow runners, deep divers, and crank baits that stay suspended. If you can find bait fishing crank baits that are lip less you will have better luck. crappies are some amazing and very adaptable fish species. These fish have so many aliases such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass and papermouth. This fish species is a migrational by nature and tends to follow the natural forage. When you are bait fishing for crappie you need to take into account the seasonal habits and locations. In addition to selecting the crappie baits you need to understand where the white perch will be located during the season of the year you are crappie fishing.

To catch crappie while bait fishing it is not enough to just select a good crappie bait. You nee to understand the calico basses diet and activity levels and behavior. Their is no set calendar for the changing seasons when you are targeting white perch. Actually the changing of the seasons is dicated by the needs of the speckled perch. The changes of physical seasons forces the the white perch to change their habits because they will need to seek the type of habitat that allows them to still locate a good abundant food source.

The bottom line is that speckled perch change their habits, feeding patterns and location to seek out an abundant food source, and in many respects is the driving force of their annual migrations from one area to another. So you probably are smart folks and figured out already that you much change your crappie fishing techniques with the changing seasons too. You will be have to be making changes to your crappie bait and crappie fishing rig selections with the change of seasons when you are bait fishing for crappie.

We all wish we could change our crappie fishing style by looking at the calendar but unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way. The typical changes we see on land with the change of the seasons such as from winter to spring, from spring to summer, summer to fall , and fall to winter are not the same under the water. Under the water changes are dictated by the length of daylight which is known as the photo period. Animals from small microorganisms such as zooplankton all the way up to the fiercest of game fish react to these changes. The change in the length of daylight will cause papermouth to migrate, spawn, and to change their feeding habits.

There are a few crappie fishing calendars that can be purchased that identify specific details of what when and where for crappie fishing seasonal changes. The best one I have come across is published by in-Fisherman and is designed to identify seasonal changes based on the fishing activity levels and seasonal needs of the pole crappie.
