A weedless spoon can be a very effective method to catch largemouth bass under certain conditions. If bass are holding tight in dense weed beds using weedless spoons is a very effective way to catch largemouth bass. Weedless spoons used to be a very popular way to catch bass but nowadays they are only used when bat fishing for large mouth bass in heavy vegetation or brush cover.

Weedless spoons are made of metal or plastic and both are very effective but react differently when retrieved through he water. For example metal spoons work better if you intend to fan cast an area because they can be cast much further then plastic bass spoons. The metal spoons are only used if you intend to bait fish for bass sub – surface because metal spoons will sink rapidly after casting them. In order to go bait fishing with metal spoons effectively they must be retrieved faster then plastic bass spoons. Unfortunately one draw back to metal spoons is that largemouth bass tend to strike them short, by only hitting the trailing plastics attached to the bass lure. To fix this problem only set the hook after you feel the weight of the bass on your line.

If you plan to fish the top of weed beds or brush then plastic spoons work much better the metal spoons, because they do not sink as fast as the metal spoon. Also plastic spoons are virtually weedless because the hook is always facing upward when these spoons are retrieved through the water.

To fish a skitter and drop retrieve make a long cast and start your fast retrieve with your rod tip pointing in a upward position, before the weedless spoon has a chance to sink. Retrieve fast enough to see the spoon skipping across the top of the surface or just below. When you start to pass over a pocket in the weed bed stop your retrieve and allow the spoon to sink into the pocket. If a largemouth bass is following you spoon it will probably strike your bass spoon as soon as it starts to drop so be ready.

If you want to fish heavy cover for largemouth bass then using a bass spinner bait is great way to fish for largemouth bass holding tight in thick weed, debris cover. The reason bass spinner baits work so well in thick cover is because the spinner blades serve a dual purpose. The blade or blades attracts the bass while they also keep your bass baits from hanging up on thick weeds brush structure.

There are basically two types of large mouth spinner baits that are quit popular and used when bait fishing for large mouth bass. There is what is called the single spin spinner bait which has only one spinning blade, and there is what is called a tandem spinner bait which has to spinner blades. The single bass bait is very popular when using bass fishing method called “helicoptering”.

The tandem largemouth bass spinner bait works best over shallow weed tops and other shallow water bait fishing presentations. You can make a tandem or single blade bass spinner bait work differently when you replace the type of spinner blades. If for example you want your spinner bait to lift off the bottom quickly or stay close to the bottom as you retrieve it then you would want to use what is called a willow leaf blade and you would retrieve your largemouth bass spinner bait slowly. If you want your large mouth bass spinner bait to stay close to the top water then you would retrieve faster and use what is called a Colorado spinner blade that creates more lift in the water.

as deep as 30ft for largemouth bass you would need to use at minimum a ¾ ounce spinner bait. To keep your spinner bait deeper you can also adjust the depth by clamping a split shot sinker to one of the arms.

Largemouth bass spinner baits can also be tipped with live baits such as nightcrawlers, salamanders, leeches, and frogs. They also can be tipped with a variety of popular largemouth bass spinner bait retrieves include what is called a slow roll, fast reel then helicopter downward, a close to the surface retrieve, or jigging. To do a fast reel helicopter retrieve cast your spinner bait past a vertical structure point then retrieve very quickly until you are near the structure point, then stop and let your bass spinner bait “helicopter” or flutter downward towards the bottom right next to the structure. To do a close to top water retrieve, keep your rod tip high and reel in your line very quickly making sure your bass spinner bait stays just bellow the surface. You most likely will need Colorado blades for this retrieve method. The close to top water retrieve works great over shallow weed cover.

To catch bass during the large mouth bass spawning period in natural lakes head for protected bays and shore lines with a firm bottom. To catch bass during the spawn in man made lakes head to backwater areas that have a firm bottom. In rivers head to shallow dead end sloughs and backwater areas off the main river channel. To catch largemouth bass during the summer and fall head to weedless points, humps that have weedy and rocky cover and that slope gradually into deeper water in natural lakes. Also sloped bays where there is dense overhead cover will hold bass because the cover keeps the sunlight out and the water temperature will be cooler. In man made lakes head the back end of creek arms. In rivers head sloughs with current, deep backwaters, and side channels in backwaters.

To catch bass while bait fishing in natural lakes during late fall and into winter check humps, points, and other structure that slope drastically to deep water. Also check inside turns and shallow flats during warm days. In man made lake head to main lake points, and any main river channel during late fall and winter. To catch large mouth bass in rivers during the late fall and winter head deep water areas off the main river channel, and near warm water discharge areas such as power plant.

Much like in rivers, the hole will hold the channel catfish for bait fishing action in ponds. Catfish will winter in the deepest holes in a pond and they will roam structure like points and flats that are close to their hole during spring, summer and fall before the ice is on. In barren ponds look for channel catfish along banks that drop off fast into  deeper water. You can find them around docks and weed beds.

Getting the bigger channel catfish in a pond to bite is sometimes very challenging, but not impossible. One of the best catfish fishing rigs to use is a simple slip sinker rig. To make a slip sinker rig to be used for bait fishing for channel catfish  in ponds follow the following simple steps. Silde a small  ¼ ounce egg sinker up your line, then tie on a two way ball bearing swivel. Make sure the ball bearing swivel is large enough so the egg sinker does not slide over the top and past it towards the hook. Next tie on a 8” to 12” inch leader with a 3/0 to 5/0 bait fishing hook. Use creek chubs cut into 2” to 3” chunks for catfish bait. You can also use gizzard shad cut into strips or chunks if creek chubs are not available. Dip baits work well if you ar targeting small channel catfish.

To catch the large channel catfish it is best to fish at night. When you find the spot you want to set up for the night you can increase your chances of catching some larger channel catfish if use a underwater fishing light and you chum the area. You can use fish guts and blood, or small chicken guts laid out in sun all day for chum. If there are some large catfish in the pond the small and taste of the chum will attract them. The underwater fishing light will attract small bait fish to the area and they will start feeding on the chum. The larger channel catfish will much les wary and come looking for an easy feed.

Its best to use bait fish using natural catfish cut baits such as creek chubs and gizzard shad. Although the shad are not native to most ponds bigger channel catfish like to eat oily fish as food. The reason chumming attracts the bigger catfish is because it intensifies there smell and taste senses. Also because as I said earlier the chum also attract small bait fish to the area. Large channel catfish cannot resist a feeding school of bait fish and you can use this fact to your advantage on your next bait fishing trip to a pond.

Most cat fishing anglers assume that catfish live primarily in lakes and rivers, but they also populate your local farm ponds. It is true that if you live to bait fishing for catfish you will find good populations in lakes, reservoirs, and rivers but don’t overlook ponds you may be surprised at the catfish fishing action in ponds.

Actually statistics show there is more opportunity to bait fish for catfish in ponds then any other freshwater location. In 1936 the U.S. Agriculture Conservation Program give farmers subsidies to build ponds. In a time period over twenty five years The number of farm ponds in the untied states exploded. Ponds are still being built today by land owners at a healthy rate, but it was this early legislation that really made a huge difference for fisherman. My point is, do not overlook ponds as a reliable water area to bait fish for catfish.

Lets talk about the different types of ponds you can catch catfish. There are three basic pond types that you can catch catfish in, such as dug ponds, built ponds, and dammed creek ponds. A pond can be a body of water as small as 1 acre or as large as 50 acres. The pond size will determine the size of the catfish you can catch, and also the type. The ponds construction will determine how many catfish will be living there, and the area of the pond they will be located during the different seasons of the year.

Dug ponds are typically dug with earth moving machines. The pond is kept full from rain run off from the surrounding land. Sometimes water pumps are installed to keep them full during dry periods of the year. The typical dug pond is rarely over 5 acres in size. Dug ponds will normally hold populations of channel catfish. If the pond is managed correctly. If you are bait fishing a dug pond in a dry period and the pond has a active pump moving water into the pond then cast your line near the moving water close to the pump. Any channel catfish in the pond will likely be attracted to the moving water. If there is no well pump or if you are fishing during a wet period of the year active channel catfish will roam the shallow banks and hold near any pond structure such as submerged logs, large rocks, docks, or weed beds.

Built ponds are created by building a dam across a low area that has a agreeable water shed , and soil type. A dam can back up large areas of water sometimes as large as 100 acres, the size of a small lake. The deepest spot in a built pond will be near the dam area. You will be able to bait fish for catfish in the late fall and winter near the dam area. When the water warms in the spring the catfish head to shallow structure areas of the pond. In the spring fish for catfish close to known structure points, and flat hard pan areas where cats love to roam.

Dammed creek ponds are normally done so for fishing and for farm irrigation. You will want to concentrate your bait fishing efforts for channel catfish and bullhead catfish in or near the old creek bed channel. If you can locate structure on the edge of the old creek channel you should have some good luck catching catfish. Catfish will always be located in what is left of the old creek channel when you catch catfish in dammed ponds Many times there will be very little fishing pressure at dammed creek ponds which open up to the opportunity to catch some good catfish table fare.
